Sacramento

Gabriel Moraga, who also named the river that named Calaveras County, named the Río del Santísimo Sacramento (Sacramento River) in 1808, after the Blessed Sacrament—before the arrival of the Spanish, the area was inhabited by the historic Nisenan, Maidu, and other indigenous peoples of California. I’ve actually spent a bit of time in Sacramento—I both went to college there and lived in the Roseville/Rocklin area—and it’s definitely come into its own recently.
